While His Show Will End, the Racist Lunatic Will Pop Up Somewhere, Sometime…
For Progressives and rational, thoughtful citizens, this change is an important and hard-fought victory. Through the advocacy organization, Color Of Change, more than 285,000 citizens spoke out in a petition campaign against Fox and Beck, leading to a loss of over 300 advertisers from his top-rated show.
The New York Times reported today:
Mr. Beck is a hugely popular figure on Fox News, averaging 2.2 million viewers each weekday, though his ratings have fallen somewhat in the last year. He is beloved by his fans for speaking out against what he sees as threats from progressives, socialists and people he deems “radicals.” His opponents — and there are many — condemn him for his conspiratorial views and apocalyptic predictions.
Media Matters for America, a Progressive organization fighting against Fox “News” highly stilted brand of — dare I even use the word in this context — “journalism,” remarked that Beck’s imminent departure was “no surprise,” given that advertisers had rejected Mr. Beck’s show ever since he labeled President Obama a racist, summer 2009.
ColorOfChange.org launched a national campaign aligned with other advocacy groups against Beck in July of 2009 after he capped a week of race-baiting directed at President Obama with the most stunning statement of them all — he called Obama a “racist” who has “a deep-seated hatred for white people, or the white culture.”
Within days the organization approached Fox News’ advertisers, requesting they cease supporting Beck’s poisonous statements with advertising dollars. Fox steadfastly refused to acknowledge the clear impact a loss of more than 300 major advertisers had on their bottom line, yet Beck’s remaining advertisers consisted of lower-tier brands that earned Fox much reduced revenue — thus turning a show that should have been a top earner into a financial liability.
Beck’s voice, his incessant conspiracy theories, his dangerous incitement to violence, his casual race-baiting — all of these will be gone from television by year’s end.
Nonetheless, Beck maintained an audience of more than 2.2 million Americans. The “Ugly American” still exists in large numbers, and they will be scanning the channels for a new outlet affirming their regressive views… stay vigilant!
Responsible citizens must continue the effort driving home the message that “deception and race-baiting are not acceptable for a ‘news’ network.” Everyday, mindful people must hold accountable those who are responsible.
