China’s Urban Boom — (Part 5) Building A Century in Fifteen Years

CITIES & THE WEALTH OF NATIONS

Guangzhou, China — With population over 11 million, Guangzhou is the third-largest city in China and the capital of Guangdong province on the Pearl River. Guangzhou is a key national transportation hub and trading port. Some estimates place the population of the entire urban agglomeration as high as 24.2 million, making it the 2nd biggest urban area in the world after Tokyo. As the largest city in one of China’s wealthiest provinces, Guangzhou attracts farmers from the countryside looking for factory work. Cantonese links to overseas Chinese and beneficial tax reforms of the 1990s have aided the city’s rapid growth.
