Edris House by E. Stewart Williams
West Cielo Drive, Palm Springs, California
A classic example of Desert Modernism, the stone-walled Edris house appears to rise organically from the rocky landscape. Built in 1954, this home was designed for Marjorie and William Edris, Seattle hotel owners, by the prominent Palm Springs architect, E. Stewart Williams.
Local stone and Douglas Fir were used for the walls of the Edris House. The swimming pool was installed before the house was built so that the construction equipment wouldn’t damage the landscape.

Beautiful. The house fits so well into the landscape.

I’d like to see a floor plan… I also noted that either the TV is carefully hidden or there ISN’T ONE (YAY!)

Love it. I prefer Palm Springs in the Summer, when it’s quiet. Love the rough-hewn wood thing, too. But was that the Golden Gate Bridge? Good lord.

@toma — The owner of the house is a former mayor of Sausalito, so the Golden Gate Bridge makes sense. Geez! Why do people have to find SOMETHING to criticize?

I am an Edris and was delighted to find this article (and many others) on the house. It is a wonderful structure. William Edris also owned The Olympic Hotel in Seattle, WA for a number of years during the 1940’s and 1950’s. A very interesting fellow. 🙂
