This steel and concrete home relates so well to the low-slung, horizontal idiom of Richard Neutra coupled with the rough-hewn, natural texture of Cliff May…

Heavy Metal draws its name, and it’s straight forward industrial aesthetic, from the custom perforated steel panels which form the envelope of the residence. More than 200 in total, each panel has a unique set of perforations based on a simple set of programmatic responses to interior and exterior conditions, which are scrutinized to determine where privacy (opacity) is most critical and where openness (transparency) is desired… generating the residence’s signature façades.

Heavy Metal’s plan is a variation on a traditional courtyard, with a large outdoor space bound on two sides by the steel and glass façade, via Neutra. The central living/dining area acts as the heart of the residence, with its increased ceiling height and warm walnut ceilings.

This central space is flanked by two wings containing guest bedrooms and the master suite, respectively, which act to define the edges of the private courtyard retreat, while a large photo studio anchors the transition between the three main spaces, completing the L-shaped plan. The lightness of Heavy Metal’s perforated exterior steel skin in conjunction with the monolithic concrete walls, exposed structural steel, warm rich walnut, and large expanses of glass give the home a distinctively classic modernist character.

Miami, FL – Multiple rooms, both interior and exterior, have been added to a non-descript, one-story home transforming it to properly interface with Miami’s tropical climate.  While the effect is striking, minimal alterations were made to the existing structure.

The house is entered through a 20’x30’x20’ volume where a reflecting pool activates the space with reflection and luminance.  The large main room is the hub organizing the house into private and public realms.  Generous  spaces with oversized windows overlook the pool and canal.  A open 60′ x 20′ x 20′ volume at the rear of the home provides the sense of a room enclosure for outdoor living.  A large circular column contains an outdoor shower open to the sky.

The second floor contains a secluded courtyard garden, off the master bedroom, for private activities.  The residence provides a flexible infrastructure for the participation and enjoyment of all the home’s residents and guests.

The Jules Brady Residence: Alice In Wonderland Modernism

As with their Case Study House #25, the modernist firm of Killingsworth, Brady, & Associates designed this home fronted by a towering 17-foot high front door that opens to a private and secure outdoor patio. This interior courtyard allows for a two-story floor-to-ceiling glass facade and a seamless indoor-outdoor relationship while respecting privacy in an urban environment.

Passing through monumental french doors into the living space one encounters dramatic 18-foot ceilings. Beyond the living room is a large dining area with it’s own private garden view and built-in wet bar made of a beautiful oiled walnut. The kitchen counter and cabinets are elevated above the floor like fine furniture, allowing windows to show below and clerestory above. A pantry, guest bedroom with 3/4 bath, laundry area, and oversized two car garage with walls of storage round out the main floor.

The second story is reached by an impressive steel staircase with sculptural walnut railing. A skylit conversation/study area with a second fireplace overlooks the living area and courtyard below via two balconies. From this vantage point, one may also enjoy the courtyard and diffused landscape beyond. Adjacent to the study is a built-in office alcove, hidden behind floor to ceiling sliding shutters; a large window floods this space with light.

Beyond more privacy shutters is an expansive dressing room/foyer with walk-in closet, vanity, and full bath on each side of the room. Original plans outline how the space was designed with the potential to be reconfigured to give the home 4 bedrooms, each having it’s own bath.

Finally, the incredibly spacious master bedroom: a loft like space open to it’s own bathroom with glass enclosed shower, dual sinks, and roman tub. Natural light floods the entire area through nine skylights. Heating and cooling is zoned with 3 specific furnaces and a/c units.

Located on a picturesque street in the Virginia Country Club neighborhood of Long Beach, California, the home’s central location allows for commutes to both Los Angeles and Orange County, as well as close proximity to the newly invigorated Bixby Knolls commercial corridor’s dining and shopping. And, if you want it, sign on the dotted line with $998,000.
